Definition

Petroleum wax is a soft, colorless material made by a mixture of hydrocarbon molecules with 20–40 carbon atoms that is extracted from petroleum, coal, or oil shale. At room temperature, it is solid. Above about 37 °C, it starts to melt, and its boiling point is above 370 °C. Candles, lubricants, electrical insulation, and crayons can all be manufactured from paraffin wax that has been colored. It is different from paraffin, which is a term sometimes used to refer to kerosene and other petroleum products.

Properties

Petroleum wax is typically found as a solid that is white, odorless, and tasteless, has a density of roughly 900 kg/m3, and typically melts between 46 and 68 °C (115 and 154 °F). It is soluble in ether, benzene, and certain esters but insoluble in water. Although it burns easily, petroleum wax is unaffected by the majority of common chemical reagents. 42 MJ/kg is the heat of combustion for it. Petroleum wax has a resistance of between 1013 and 1017 ohm meters, making it a superior electrical insulator. With the exception of some plastics, this is superior to almost all other materials. With a specific heat capacity of 2.14–2.9 J g1 K1 and a heat of fusion of 200–220 J g1, paraffin wax is an efficient heat-storage substance. Petroleum wax can be used in wax element thermostats for industrial, home, and especially automotive purposes because it expands significantly as it melts.

What is the purpose of petroleum wax?

Petroleum wax's main components are paraffin, and it melts between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius. mostly used to protect food and other products from moisture and to keep them watertight. It can also be used as a base ingredient in cosmetics. Petroleum is converted into paraffin wax by dewaxing stocks of light lubricating oil. It is utilized in electrical insulators, wax paper, polishes, and cosmetics. It serves as a foundation for medical ointments, aids in the extraction of fragrances from flowers, and provides the wood with a waterproof coating.
