Between the way her father treated her, and subsequent blaming Maddie received from her mother, the girl's perception of love has been poisoned, and twisted. She sees affection, both physical and emotional, as mostly meaningless. That is, it carries no greater importance than any other interaction.

In a Modern/Fantasy element, Maddison turned to otherworldly means of escaping her situation -- witchcraft. A young, foolish Maddie bargained with a demon, giving it passage within her body, and she's been fighting the thing's slow corruption ever since.
