According to legend, King Minos of Crete prayed to Poseidon for favor, in order to prove his worth as ruler in opposition to his brothers. The Sea god sent Minos an alabaster bull, which he was to sacrifice in the deity's honor for reward. However, due to the bull's pure beauty, Minos chose to keep it instead, and Poseidon punished him; Minos' wife, Pasiphae, was cursed to fall in love with the Cretan Bull, and their mating bore a child -- the half-man, half-bull creature of myth, known as the Bull of Minos, or Minotaur. The Queen named it Asterion, and attempted to raise the child as her own, but it quickly grew out of control in size, as well as in hunger. To protect Asterion from man, and man from Asterion, Pasiphae and Minos had the inventor Daedalus create the labyrinth, to become the Minotaur's prison and home. There Asterion remained, trusting wholeheartedly in their mother's instruction to never attempt to leave, and to protect themselves should anyone enter except for her.
